Arkansas high school state tournament roundup: Greenwood baseball team outlasts Batesville

In a wild 5A baseball quarterfinal, Greenwood hung on for a 5-4 win against Batesville on Friday night in Jonesboro.

The Bulldogs (20-10) broke a 2-all score in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk from Hunter Houston, scoring Luke Brewer. They added two more runs when Andrew Elliott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by an RBI single from Dylan Strozier.

Batesville scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases, but Greenwood pitcher Chance Eoff got a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Van Buren 6, Marion 4: Van Buren rallied in the fifth with three runs to reach the Class 5A semifinals.

Marion walked in two runs to help the Pointers. The first gave Van Buren (25-7) the lead, 4-3, in the fifth and the second pushed the Pointers up 6-4 in the sixth.

Sammy Seeger was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Tanner Callahan was also 2-for-4. Devin Gattis pitched a complete game while Marion used four pitchers. Gattis gave up 10 hits with four earned runs and four strikeouts. 

Ashdown 15, Booneville 12: Trailing 15-7 entering the top of the seventh, the Bearcats put together a furious rally, scoring five runs and getting the tying run to the plate with two outs. But Ashdown got that final out to hold off Booneville in Friday's 3A quarterfinal.

Rylen Ray went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Booneville (18-7).

Softball

Greenwood 11, Marion 5: Trailing 2-0 early, the Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in the second and four more in the fifth to seize control in Friday's 5A quarterfinals.

Natalie Thomas was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Greenwood (24-8), while Macey Cutsinger went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Freshman Tori Howard was the winning pitcher, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. She struck out one.

Mansfield 5, Quitman 4: A dramatic two-run homer by Alyson Edwards with one out in the bottom of the seventh kept the Lady Tigers' season alive as they won Friday's 2A quarterfinal in Carlisle.

Edwards ended up going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. She was also the winning pitcher, giving up eight hits and striking out six.

Also for Mansfield (17-4), Brooklyn Adams was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Chloe Creekmore was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.

Bentonville 7, Northside 1: The Lady Bears' season ended with a loss in Friday's 6A quarterfinals at Cabot.

Northside (19-10) was able to avoid the shutout when senior Keilee Robberson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh. In her final game as a Lady Bear, pitcher Cailin Massey struck out nine.

Hoxie 4, Booneville 3: A passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed Hoxie to score the game-winning run in Friday's 3A quarterfinals.

Brooke Turner went 3-for-3 for the LadyCats (25-4), while Layla Byrum had a two-run single and scored a run. Leigh Swint's sacrifice fly tied the score at 3-all after Booneville trailed, 3-0, entering the fifth.

Boys Soccer

Van Buren 5, Batesville 0. Pedro Rodriguez, Fernando Romero, Kylan Almond, Jose Zarate and Chris Melendez each scored as the Pointers (19-2-1) advanced to the Class 5A semifinalsFriday at Siloam Springs. It was Van Buren's 14th shutout of the season.

Rogers Heritage 3, Northside 1: Two first-half goals, including a penalty kick to break a 1-1 score, lifted Heritage in Friday's 6A quarterfinal at Springdale.

The Grizzlies (11-4-3) had tied the score with less than 20 minutes left in the opening half on a goal from senior Rafael Barroso.
