Booneville boys, Charleston girls clinch berths in regional tournament
Booneville punched its ticket to the regional tournament next week with a convincing 73-46 win over Paris (12-12) in the second round of the 3A-4 district tournament in Booneville on Tuesday.
Senior Jacob Herrera led the Bearcats (15-5) with 19 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Fellow senior Jordan Sanchez added 16 points and eight rebounds. CJ Johnson and Blake Jones tallied 10 points each, with Johnson adding five steals and Jones creating six assists. Booneville shot 53% from the field.
Mequeil Ellingberg, Caleb Cunningham and Duke Walker scored 10 points each for the Eagles (12-12), who connected on 17 of their 21 free throws. Booneville advances to take on conference champion Waldron on Thursday in Waldron.
Northside 70, LR Southwest 49
The Grizzlies moved above .500 in 6A-Central play with a road win. Northside (11-10, 7-6) wraps up the regular season on March 4 at North Little Rock.
Northside trailed 11-5 early on before rallying to take a 31-26 halftime lead. The Grizzlies then started the second half on an 11-0 run to eventually pull away.
Jacob Joe scored 14 points and hit three 3-pointers, while Jordan Wright added 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Wright had 11 points by halftime.
Muldrow 55, Checotah 33
The Bulldogs built a 22-17 halftime lead before doubling up on Checotah in the third quarter, 20-10, to win in a 4A district playoff game.
In their last appearance on their home court, Muldrow seniors Lawson Daugherty and Watie Byrd scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Daugherty also hit two 3s.
Trenden Collins added 11 points for the Bulldogs (17-3).
Charleston 50, Booneville 32
Three Charleston players tallied 11 points each as the Lady Tigers (10-8) moved on in the 3A-4 district tournament with a win over Booneville (13-9) in Charleston.
Rylee Ross, Maci Oldridge and Brooke Groen each scored 11 and Charleston qualified for next week’s regional tournament in Bergman. The Lady Tigers played at Danville on Wednesday.
Booneville sophomore Leigh Swint led all scorers with 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Northside 60, LR Southwest 31
For the fourth straight season, the Lady Bears won at least a share of the conference championship.
Northside can win the 6A-Central outright with a win March 4 at North Little Rock.
Jersey Wolfenbarger had 12 of her team-high 23 points in the opening half as the Lady Bears (22-2, 12-1) raced out to a 35-14 halftime lead. Haitiana Releford scored 12, as well.
Muldrow 62, Checotah 29
Mariah Jenkins and Katie Grace Floyd each hit five 3-pointers to lead the Lady Bulldogs in their 4A district playoff win.
Jenkins finished with 21 points while Floyd had 15 points courtesy of her five treys. Both made four of those 3s in the opening half, as Muldrow (15-4) held a commanding 41-15 lead at the break.
