Booneville sales tax extension approved
Booneville voters approved a five-year extension of a 1% sales tax collected in the city by a vote of 112-26.
The passage of the tax is the sixth by city voters.
There were 73 voters who cast ballots at the Jeral Hampton Meeting Place on Tuesday, with 58 of those voting in favor of the extension.
The early voting period drew 63 voters with 52 of them in favor of continuing the tax.
In both cases voters entered a facility through one door and exited through another with poll workers all wearing masks or other face coverings and socially distanced.
While not required to do so — Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s mask mandate exempts the voting process — voters also overwhelmingly wore masks.
There were three absentee ballots requested for the election, two of which were returned. Both were in favor of the tax.
The election was initially set for April 14 but was canceled due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
