Jail taxes have topped $500,000 this year

Logan County’s jail taxes have surpassed the a half million dollars in collections through the first five months of 2020.

The county was remitted $104,822.42 for one of the half percent sales taxes collected to build and maintain the 100-bed detention center on Grober Street in Paris. Collection for the second half percent tax was one cent less.

That brings to $504,935 the total for 2020, which is an increase of $30,903.06, or 6.5 percent, more than the same period of 2019.

To date the taxes have taken in $3.72 million since the tax took effect on Jan. 1, 2017.

One of the one-half percent taxes is repealed after the bonds sold to fund the construction of the facility have been retired. The county sold $12.5 million to build and equip the jail.
