With spring break on the horizon the Magazine Rattlers played four Conference 2A-4 games over a two day period and went into a 10-day break with a record of 7-0.

The Rattlers swept a pair of five inning games at Hartford Wednesday. The games were originally scheduled for Monday but were pushed back due to a chilly forecast. Magazine also swept two five inning affairs from Johnson County Westside at home on Thursday.

Magazine 9, 15

Hartford 0, 5

Magazine jumped on Hartford with four runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Michael Vasquez started it with a walk, Jonathan Travis doubled and a Hustler error helped the play. After walks to J.W. Crossland and Layton Robinson an error allowed Kalob Helms to reach.

Magazine added a run in the third when Robinson tripled and stole home on a double steal with Mason Suttles, then put the game away with a four run the fifth.

Travis opened the fifth with a single and after walks to Crossland and Robinson, Suttles was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Helms later drove in one with a ground out.

Crossland (2-0) and Helms combined on the shutout with Crossland going the first four innings allowing two hits and a walk. Helms got out of a two base runner jam in the fifth to keep Hartford scoreless.

However, the Hustlers would score three times in the top of the first inning against Jonathan Stover in the nightcap.

Stover got plenty of run support an inning later when Magazine took a 6-3 lead. Suttles started the inning with a double and Stover contributed a single. Helms singled home a run, Cody Shelton singled home another, a walk to Brent Loyd loaded the bases and another walk to Vasquez scored another run.

Travis singled home two more and when Crossland struck out but the third strike was dropped, Vasquez swiped home on a throw to first.

Stover walked the leadoff man to start the third and head coach Randy Loyd went to Helms, who finished it for his first win of the season.

After Hartford cut it to 6-4, Stover singled and scored on an error that allowed Helms to reach in the bottom of the third and it was 7-4.

Magazine scored eight times in the fourth to end any doubt. Crossland doubled and Robinson singled and were still aboard with two out when Stover doubled them home, Shelton and Loyd reach on errors, Vasquez and Travis walked, and Crossland singled to drive in two more.

Down 15-4 Hartford managed one run on a walk, a single and an error in their fifth.

Layton Robinson had just struck out Chad Estep for the first out in the top of the fifth inning in the opener when he reached his pitch count so Jonathan Stover came on to wrap it up.

Stover struck out Austin Campbell for the second out but allowed singles to Austin Hayes and Taylor Houston to make it 9-2.

But with runners on the corners when Houston broke for second J.W. Crossland fired the ball to Brent Loyd, who threw behind Hayes at third and Kalob Helms ran the Rebel shortstop/pitcher down for the final out of the game.

Magazine had led since the second inning — Robinson hit the two batters of the game, suffered a passed ball and a run scored on a ground out — when Lane Oliver, pinch running for Cody Shelton scored on a passed ball and Jonathan Travis double in two more.

After Crossland was hit by a pitch and Robinson the bases were loaded for Stover, who lifted a fly ball to right that drove in Travis and Crossland, rather than stop at third was waved home to make it 5-1.

Crossland, Stover and Shelton all singled home runs in the fourth and another scored on an outfield miscue to make it 9-1. Travis had opened the inning with a walk and Stover’s single chased Campbell.

Robinson (2-0) struck out nine before giving way to Stover.
