The Booneville Junior High Bearcats all but wrapped up a 3A-1 Conference title Thursday night with a 6-0 win over Charleston on a rain soaked Doug Scheel Field at Bearcat Stadium.
The Bearcats (8-1, 6-0) stand alone atop the league standing with only twice beaten Lamar remaining on the schedule next Thursday.
Thursday it was a defense that surrendered minus 1 yard of offense in the second half and only 34 yards in the entire game that led the way to the win.
It is the second straight shutout and third of the season for the Bearcats.
The only touchdown of the night came after Cody Elliott blocked a Tiger punt giving the Bearcats the ball at the Charleston 18.
Rylen Ray, who ran 20 times for 77 yards, converted a fourth-and-2 with a 4-yard pickup to get the ball to the 6 and after Dunn Daniel was thrown for a 4-yard loss, Brooks Herrera scored from the 10 with 2:43 left in the opening quarter.
The Tigers would reach the Bearcat 7 on their next possession but a third-and-7 snap would sail over Brandon Scott’s head and Elliot ran Scott down for a 10-yard loss. Scott then threw an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Charleston had another possession inside the red zone before halftime after a Bearcat fumble but a Brendan Dove tackle behind the line of scrimmage and a false start played into another fourth down incompletion.
In the seventh grade contest that started the soggy evening, head coach Jacob Hattabaugh got his first win as the Bearcats won 30-8.
The Bearcats welcomed Damarie Poole to the field for the first time and he ran for 82 yards and a touchdown. Noah Stewart scored twice, and Jace Washbun also reached the end zone for the Bearcats.
