A 15-minute span that started in the first and spilled through halftime and into the third quarter powered the Magazine Rattlers to an easy 39-14 road win over Mount Ida Friday night.
Xeng Yang helped get it all going.
With 1:49 left in the first quarter Xeng Yang and Caleb Hyatt dropped A.J. Perez for a 3-yard loss on a fourth down and the Rattlers (2-0) had the ball at their own 33-yard line, leading 6-0.
Tatum Scott converted a third-and-7 with a 14-yard run, Kaedon Trejo moved the chains with 13 on a fourth-and-3 and Yang completed a 67-yard drive with a 20 yard run. Scott threw to Jacob Hall for a two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.
Yang caused a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that Brad Price recovered at the Lion 19. Trejo scored from the 7 and Scott kicked the point after to make it 21-0 with 7:28 to go in the half.
Mount Ida (0-1) wasn’t finished turning the ball over, or putting the ball on the ground — the Lions coughed it up nine times.
Two plays after the kickoff Ashton Droemer recovered a fumble that set up a nine play drive that ended when Scott went 7 yards for his second touchdown of the night to make it 27-0 with 2:37 left in the half.
Scott finished with a team high 98 yards on 8 carries. He also completed a pair of passes for another 18 yards.
Two more plays after the kickoff Bryce McDowell caused and recovered another Lion fumble.
Hyatt took his turn scoring with a 6-yard run 37 seconds before halftime and it was 33-0. Hyatt was finished with 45 yards on eight carries.
Mount Ida had gotten the ball to start the game so the Rattlers started the second half with the ball after a short onside kick.
Yang went for 33 the fist play and at the 10:52 mark of the quarter Faughn, became the fifth Rattler to score, when he picked up a fumbled exchange and scored from the 2 to make it 39-0.
Yang finished was 58 yards on four carries and Faughn ran for 49 yards on his six attempts.
Faughn and Droemer also led the Rattlers defensively with seven total stops with 2.5 by Faughn going for a loss.
Mount Ida got on the scoreboard with a 12-yard run by Perez with three minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Lions scored a second touchdown on a 63-yard pass play from Austin Cooper to John Hoeskema with about five minutes remaining and Baylor Bates added a conversion run.
The Rattlers are idle this week and will next play on Sept. 20, when they host Cutter Morning Star.
