A four seed going into the Class 3A state tournament in Harrison yesterday, the Booneville Bearcats took down Region 1 top seeded Elkins 6-5.

Michael Hesson (5-4) worked five and two thirds innings to win his fifth straight decision, a streak that started on April 9 with a win over Lamar and included the Class 3A Region 2 tournament win over Mayflower that earned the state tournament berth.

Blakley Cobb came on with two aboard in the fifth with the Bearcats leading 6-4 and got a strike out to end the inning.

Although Cobb surrendered a solo home run to Will Trolinger with one away in the seventh and had the game prolonged by an error, he got a third strike out to end the game for a save.

Cobb threw 19 pitches, 16 of them for strikes, and is eligible to pitch again tomorrow.

Leading the Bearcat offense were brothers Carson and Randon Ray, who both had three hits. Randon Ray also drove in a run and Hesson helped himself with two RBI.

The Bearcats (18-9) move on to face DeWitt at 2:30 p.m. today. The Dragons beat Piggott 8-2 in eight innings last night.

Bryce Parrish took the loss for the Elks, who end the season 18-5.
