On Tuesday night in Coal Hill the Magazine Lady Rattlers and Rattlers both had the final shot in tie games but couldn’t it to fall, or get to the free throw line, and both would lose overtime games.

It was the second time the Lady Rattlers were edged by Westside and second time they lost an overtime game this season.

Magazine took a 25-23 halftime lead on a 3 by Max Greb just before the buzzer and the Rattlers would continue to lead until the closing seconds of the game.

Greb hit three third quarter 3s, all on assists from Tatum Scott, and the lead would grow to 40-30 with 1:25 left in the quarter.

Greb scored 30 points and Scott handed out five assists, all after halftime, in the game.

With 26 seconds to go Max Greb stole the ball but had it stolen back and was charged with his fifth foul of the game trying to record the third steal in seconds.

Peyton Chrisman hit one of two free throws to make it 54-52 and a back court steal and layup by Jamison Morgan tied the game.

Out of a time out Jacob Hall took a shot for the win but it wouldn’t fall and the second overtime game of the night commenced.

Magazine took a 56-54 lead on a Scott to Raggio play just six seconds into the overtime but Westside tied it on two Austin Bartlett free throws — Westside shot 12 free throws in the extra session, 30 after halftime and 46 on the night.

A free throw by Tanner Bryant made it 57-56 and a James Linton basket had Westside up 59-56 before another basket by Raggio cut it back to one.

Westside led 60-58 when Scott scored with 1:05 to play to tie it at 60 and Raggio, with 47.1 seconds left, gave Magazine a 62-60 lead with Magazine’s only free throws of overtime. The Rattlers shot 15 after the break and 26 on the night.

The back-breaker came when Linton hit a 3 for the lead with 25.4 seconds to play and Caleb Hyatt was whistled for a foul under the basket. Bryant hit one of two for a 64-62 lead.

That would be Hyatt’s fifth foul, joining Greb, Chase Gibson and Landen Gilbert as having fouled out of the game.

After Bryant missed two free throws with 12.5 seconds to play Linton hit one of two with 7.6 seconds remaining for a 65-62 lead.

Hall again took the final shot, missing on an attempt to tie.

The Lady Rattlers survived a 7:55 scoring drought and had a chance to pull out the win.

The Lady Rattlers led 18-15 at the half, despite not scoring after the 2:50 mark of the second quarter.

That drought would continue through most of the third quarter while Westside would go in front on what became a 13-0 run.

Kiara Vasquez also picked up her third and fourth fouls during the run and went to the bench before Kelsey Krigbaum hit a 3 to stop the drought.

Hannah Smith then scored her teams next six points and had them within 32-27 13.4 seconds to play in the third.

Smith stayed on fire in the final quarter, as she scored 17 straight for Magazine, getting the Lady Rattlers within 40-38 with 2:58 to play.

Smith, who finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, then had her seventh assist, to Hannah Green to tie the game with 2:06 lead, erasing a nine Westside point lead in just 2:37.

Scoring after pulling down one of her 10 rebounds, Green also gave the Lady Rattlers a 42-40 lead with 1:34 left.

Magazine also had the ball back but Kelsey Criss punched it away from Vasquez and scored on a layup to tie it with 24 seconds left.

Vasquez took a deeply contested final shot that drew no whistle and Jordyn Krigbaum got the rebound and threw back up a prayer, that missed sending the game into overtime.

Gwen Turpin hit a 3 to give Westside the lead in the extra session but Vasquez cut it back to 45-44 with 1:48 to play.

Free throws by Turpin and Criss closed it out for Westside. Criss scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds and Turpin scored 11 points.
