It was a historic day for the Booneville cross-country team last Tuesday, as for the first time they hosted the district meet. And for the senior boys’ team, it was historic in more ways than one.
The Bearcats finished second in the meet to Lamar and will be heading to the 3A state meet to be held at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs Friday.
Sophomore Austin Hill led the Bearcat contingent of runners across the line. His time of 20:20.9 for the 5K run was good enough for second place overall behind winner Roc Webb of Lamar.
Hill was followed by Grant Goers in 4th place, while Blakley Cobb was 8th, Blake Jones 10th and Zac Costa 11th to complete the scoring. Andrew Matteson (14th) and Jacob Herrera (15th) completed the Booneville contingent.
The only other division to field a full Booneville team was the junior high girls, who were the runners-up to Lamar. Leading the way for Booneville was seventh-grader Lexi Franklin, who finished second with a time of 10:55.9 for the 1 1/2 mile run. This was six seconds back of winner Juliah Rodgers of Jessieville.
Heaven Sanchez was the next Jr. Lady Cat across the line, finishing sixth. The other three Booneville runners were Sara Ulmer (11th), JayDence Keatts (12th) and Kia Scantling (14th).
Three Booneville harriers ran as individuals in the junior boys’ division which was won by Jessieville. London Lee finished as the runner-up behind winner behind Noah Zetts of Jessieville; Lee ran the course in 9:47. The other runners for BJH were Emory Honey in seventh and Trenton Jones who finished 20th.
The cross-country teams are coached by Ronnie Denton.
