Gavin Kent was ready if he was called upon for a field goal to try to beat Gravette at Bearcat Stadium Thursday night.
The problem was while Kent stood holding the kicking block, the Junior High Bearcats turned the ball over with a fumble and the game would end in a 16-16 tie.
The Bearcats (1-0-1) had gotten to the Gravette 10-yard line one play earlier as Randon Ray hit Colton Ritchie for 32 yards with the only Bearcat completion of the night.
Gravette tied the game with 60 seconds to play on a 3-yard run by Cy Hilger. Hilger, the quarterback, then got to the edge and scored the tying two point conversion.
The tying drive began at the Gravette 19 and included two third down conversions and the Bearcats jumping offside on another third down to move the chains. The drive was also kept alive on a fourth-and-9 pass from Hilger to Ian Drake for 13 yards.
After the game was tied, Ritchie returned the kickoff to the Bearcat 43-yard line and Ray was stopped for no gain and then ran for 15 to the Gravette 42 before the pass to Ritchie.
Ray finished with 17 carries for 105 yards in the game.
Gravette had drawn first blood with their first possession but needed to go just 17 yards to do it after a snap over Ray’s head on a would be punt lost 24 yards.
After earning a first-and-goal at the 6 it took the Lions (0-1-1) four downs to score. Isaac Dann scored from the 2 and Hilger threw to Johnny Dunfee for the extra two.
It stayed 8-0 until the 2:44 mark of the second quarter when Ray went 32 yards for a touchdown then ran for the extra two to tie it, 8-8.
Typically a halfback or quarterback, Ray was playing fullback in place of Ethan Wooldridge. That meant Ty Goff manned the quarterback spot most of the night and Rocky Ross held down the halfback spot.
One of two Jacob Herrera interceptions gave the Bearcats the ball at their own 23 with 6:22 left in the third quarter but the Bearcats would be forced to punt.
The Lions managed two first downs before Ritchie forced and recovered a fumble at the Gravette 44.
Six plays later Ty Goff faked to Ray and was untouched on a 12-yard run. Ray’s extra two made it 16-8.
Gravette tied it on a drive that would take 8:19.
Statistics showed the game was close as the Bearcats had 163 yards to 151 for Gravette. Dann had 87 yards to lead Gravette.
Ross was the leading tackler for the Bearcats with nine.
The Bearcats will close out their nonconference schedule tomorrow by hosting Alma. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
