The Booneville Junior High Bearcats proved to be little of a test for Class 5A Alma Thursday night in a 33-6 road loss.
Alma scored the first two times they had the football on runs by Josh Davis. One run covered 13 yards at the 2:36 mark of the first quarter and the other 66 yards at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter.
D.J. George made one point after but the other was blocked by Dominic Helms and it was 13-0.
The Bearcats (1-2) then moved the chains a couple of times and had a fourth down pass that looked like it might go for a touchdown slip through Andrew Robertson’s hands and the Airedales took over at their own 35.
Davis got 41 — he ran for 187 yards on just eight carries — the next play and Wesley Painter hit Cody Rodriguez for 24 and a touchdown to complete a two-play drive and it was 19-0 at the half. Helms and Ethan Pirraglia again blocked the PAT.
Out of the intermission the Bearcats forced a punt but were forced to do the same themselves and Alma pushed the lead to 26-0 on a four play drive that saw Grayson Bailey score from the 31 and George add the PAT.
Ty Goff returned the kickoff to the Bearcat 44 and the Bearcats started the final quarter with a 9-yard Evan Schlinker to Cam Brasher pass that was enhanced by a roughing the passer penalty to get the Bearcats to the Alma 26-yard line.
Brasher was the Bearcat leader with 58 yards on 12 carries and his reception was Schlinker’s only completion of the night as the Bearcats managed only 120 total yards.
Following the penalty Gabe Fennell went off the right tackle to the end zone and it was 26-6. Gavin Kent’s point after try was blocked.
Alma inflicted its final damage of the night on a 5-yard Wesley Painter touchdown run and George PAT with 4:16 left that made it 33-6.
Anthony McKesson couldn’t hold on to the football on the ensuing kickoff and Alma recovered then ran out the clock.
The Bearcats will be back in action Thursday at home, taking on Pottsville in the Conference 4A-4 opener.
