Booneville Bearcat band member James Schmitt has accepted a band scholarship to attend Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, beginning in fall of 2020.
The scholarship is valued at $2,000 per semester for eight semesters making a total value of $16,000. In addition to his band scholarship, Schmitt has been awarded academic scholarships of $5,500 per semester. This makes his total scholarship amount top $60,000.
“I am so proud of James. He is a fine all-around musician, continuously curious and a joy to have as a band student. He will be missed. I am confident he will be an asset to the SAU band program,” said Brian Rhodes, director of bands for Booneville Public Schools.
Schmitt, who plays multiple instruments with trombone being the primary instrument, is set to major in music.
“We are very excited to have James join our SAU Band family. His academic and music performance records speak for themselves. It’s always wonderful to get a student from an outstanding program like the one you have at Booneville” adds John Paul Wilson, director of bands, Southern Arkansas University.
There was to be a public signing for Schmitt, attended by Wilson, at Booneville High School on March 18, but the school was closed due to the COVID 19 virus.
