Residents looking for a deal on furniture, office equipment, vehicles and heavy machinery will have an opportunity to bid on surplus items at an upcoming city auction.

“We haven’t had a city auction in a couple of years, frankly, because we haven’t had enough surplus to merit an auction,” City Administrator Carl Geffken said in a press release.

Geffken said careful budget management and the support of the community has allowed for the purchase of new vehicles and equipment in the Police and Sanitation departments. Other departments have also “cycled through” some assets, lending enough surplus to warrant an auction.

City staff is working to collect surplus assets and begin logging the descriptions, conditions, serial numbers and additional information before being put up for sale. This is beneficial to the public and to the city as it works to properly remove items from the inventory lists.

“It’s our responsibility to properly account for public assets in use and for those disposed of as surplus,” said Geffken. “It’s also our responsibility to ensure there’s no funny business with the sale. It’s a matter of public trust.”

Some of the larger items expected to be up for auction include, but are not limited to, mowers, used trucks and SUVs, buses, trailers, backhoes and excavators.

City employees and their families are not allowed to participate in or purchase items being auctioned, the press release states. Friends of city employees are also prohibited from purchasing an item and then transferring it to the employee.

Employees are not allowed to attend the auction to avoid the “appearance of impropriety,” Geffken said.

The previous auction held in 2017 generated approximately $114,000 for the city. Legal notice will be published in the Times Record, and Looper Auctioneers will conduct the auction. All payments will be remitted to the city.

A list of items for sale will be available Wednesday, Sept. 4 on the city website. The auction will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Transit Department facility, located at 6821 Jenny Lind Road.
