Last week Grover Hughes of Booneville presented Brittany Downs with a $5,000 donation to River Valley Literacy Council.

Downs is a board member of the Council and the librarian at the Logan County branch of River Valley Regional Library System located in Booneville.

The purpose of the Literacy Council is to provide free quality instruction and support to literacy-seeking adults across a five county region, including Logan, Pope, Franklin, Johnson, and Yell counties. Non-native speakers make up about 90 percent of the student population.

Teaching is accomplished through one on one tutoring and small group tutoring. All instruction and services are free of charge. Donations like Hughes’ make it possible for the Council to build up strong communities.

Hughes is a long-time supporter and patron of the River Valley Library at Booneville where he can often be found helping community members with learning. “

He has always been someone willing to help” says Downs. “He is well-loved throughout the Booneville community and can often be found playing his guitar at local restaurants.”

The River Valley Literacy Council works in the community to recruit both tutors and students. Tutors help students learn to read and/or improve their reading skills, assist students in passing their GED or citizenship tests, and help students with skills needed to seek employment. ‘
