A debate by the five city of Booneville mayoral candidates for has been organized for 6 p.m., Monday night, Sept. 17, at Littlefield Building on the South Logan County Fairgrounds.
The event is being organized by the Booneville Rotary Club and club officials say they have gotten commitments from all five candidates to participate in the debate.
“Hopefully it will be beneficial (for citizens),” Rotarian Blankenship said.
Blankenship said last week each of the candidates — alphabetically, Edgar Baker, Aaron Brewer, Bobby Halford, Harold “Porky” Kimbrell, and incumbent mayor Jerry Wilkins — will each be permitted to make an opening statement and each of the men will then respond to questions.
The questions, Blankenship said, are being suggested by community members and each of the candidates will be able to answer each question.
While there will be no open questions from the audience, following the debate, which will last about an hour, refreshments will be available and audience members will be permitted to speak with candidates directly.
Blankenship said some aspects of the debate are still being discussed, including determining the order in which candidates will respond to queries and who will serve as the moderator for the event.
