The Logan County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a suicide awareness and prevention program Monday, Oct. 29 at the First National Bank Community Center

Additional sponsors are the Logan County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee and the Extension Homemakers County Council Center. The presenter of the program is Tanya Oates, Arkansas Representative of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Programs and Services.

This program will tell the warning signs of a mental health crisis and the risk factors of suicide, how to recognize the signs of depression, how to talk to that person and where to go for help. They are inviting the general public, parents, teachers, counselors, ministers, law enforcement, EMT’s, first responders and firemen.

Warning signs are:

• Changes in personality and/or appearance: A radical change in attitude and lack of concern for appearance may be a tall-tale sign that someone’s lost their way.

• Excessive sadness or moodiness: Long-lasting depression, mood swings, and unexpected rage indicate someone needs professional help. Urge the person to seek help as soon as possible.

• Self-destructive behavior: Dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, engaging in unsafe sex and increased use of drugs and/or alcohol might indicate that the person no longer values his or her life.

• Life changing crisis: Death of a loved one or pet, divorce or breakup of a relationship, diagnosis of a major illness, loss of a job, serious financial woes – all can push a fragile personality past the breaking point. This is when people need the support of a friend the most.

• Persistent hopelessness: Suicidal people often believe they have run out of options, have no control over their lives and no one cares about them. If it seems they believe there is no help, help them find it.

• Typing up loose ends: If a person begins giving away prized possessions, drafting a will and tidying up affairs, they are likely planning not to be around for long.
