Local residents can look forward to a variety of events and attractions at Parrot Island Waterpark this year.
Parrot Island held a media and sponsor reception at noon Tuesday to preview sponsored events planned for the upcoming season. The park's fifth season will begin May 24 at 3 p.m., a news release states.
Chad Jones, president and creative director of Rightmind Advertising, said several popular activities will be coming back to the park. This includes the Aqua Jog, Tiny Tot Time, Value Mondays and Friend Frenzy. In addition, Parrot Island has added 14 Dark Water Nights this year, during which it will be open from 7:30-10 p.m.
Another event called "Grad Night" will be held from 610 p.m. Friday, the Parrot Island website states. Jones said anybody who is graduating from an area high school can get into the park for $10 at that time. Other upcoming events include this year's World's Largest Swimming Lesson on June 20, Teen Nights, which will be held June 8 and July 13, a First Responders Appreciation Day July 14, and a Military Appreciation Day July 28. The full calendar of park events can be found on the website.
Those at the reception were also given a tour of the park and could see a new surf attraction, the FlowRider, which is currently under construction. Jones said it is being built by Burton Pools & Spas.
"Currently, it's having its concrete walls formed and poured so they can set," Parrot Island Waterpark General Manager Kyle Taylor said. "The last of them will be poured this Friday, so then after they cure and form up, we can strip them down, and then the manufacturer of the FlowRider (WhiteWater West) will come in, add their pieces and parts to it, and then we'll start it up and start doing testing."
Taylor said construction on the FlowRider began around April 1. It will be ready for Parrot Island customers to use in early summer.
