Unlike most of those against whom he was competing, Booneville’s Cody Harrel was taking part in only his third track meet of the season Saturday.
Never-mind that it was the Meet of Champs meet in Lake Hamilton.
After two of his three jumps Harrel, who won the event in the 4A meet in Heber Springs on May 2, stood in fifth place.
Harrel, who also plays football, basketball, baseball and was on the weightlifting team, would drop to seventh — good enough for two points — with 21’ 2" being his best landing.
That was well short of the 21’ 11 1/2" he jumped to win the 4A meet and event two inches short of what he jumped in the District 4A-4 meet in Waldron to qualify for the state meet.
Harrel was the only South Logan County athlete at the Meet of Champs. Magazine’s Shelby Gordon was thought to be the 800-meter winner in the 2A meet but after some confusion was cleared up, she actually ended up third.
