School may have started last Monday, but competition was well underway by then for the Booneville golf team.

Booneville has hosted two matches at Cherokee Creek Country Club and, in late September, will be hosting the 3A-1 district championships.

Golf coach Jason Wallace said last week the Bearcat boys are competing well with the drop to Class 3A. Meanwhile the Lady Cats are up to six team members and are competing at a high level.

League member Charleston was girls state runner up last season, and have all of their best golfers back, thus are the favorites to probably win state, Wallace said.

"They beat our girls by eight strokes on August 4. A week later, our girls beat them by six strokes," said Wallace. "We have no seniors, while Charleston’s best golfer is a senior."
