The Magazine Rattlers had a couple of opportunities to put away the Brinkley Tigers last Friday night in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs, but Magazine let them slip through their hands.
It cost the Rattlers (8-3) in the end because the Tigers (4-7) were able to force overtime and claim a 20-17 decision to move on to the second round.
Early on it was Brinkley who let a golden opportunity go by the wayside. After blocking an Abraham Dority punt the Tigers fumbled, but got the ball back before eventually turning the ball over on downs.
Second possessions for each team were almost carbon copies, except Dority got his punt off after a three play possession and the Tigers fourth down play was a bad snap and a 13-yard loss with Cheenew Yang on the tackle.
From there the Rattlers went 60 yards in seven plays with Billy Yang running 3 yards for the touchdown. Abraham Dority added a two point conversion run for an 8-0 lead.
Brinkley converted one fourth down but came up short on another as Jon Christensen made one of his 15 tackles on the night.
Dority started the next Rattler drive with 6 yards and Charly Moua went 63 yards on the next snap and it was 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Dority finished the night with 93 yards and Moua added 87 for Magazine.
After another fourth down bad snap, the Rattlers had the ball back at the Tiger 45-yard line. Dority moved the chains on a fourth-and-3 but a holding penalty backed the Rattlers up. Moua hit Billy Yang for 17 on a third-and-19 but a fourth down fumble gave the Tigers the ball back.
The teams exchanged punts to start the second half before the Tigers went 73 yards in eight plays. Chase Harrell hit Tyler Armstrong for 35 yards on one play then hit Xavier Amos for 20 yards and the touchdown to make it 14-6.
Christensen sacked Armstrong on the two point conversion play.
After a Rattler punt Magazine was able to hold on downs at the Rattler 36 when Moua broke up a fourth down pass.
A possession later the Rattlers again held on a fourth down play at the Magazine 40.
Moving to the Tiger 20, the Rattlers looked as if they were ready to put the game away after that stand but a fumble kept Brinkley in it.
The Tigers took advantage with a 15-play drive to tie the game. The big play came on back-to-back completions on third-and-35 and fourth-and-8. There was a second fourth down conversion before Amos ran 15 yards for a touchdown. Amos also added the extra two to tie it at 14-14.
Dority got five yards on the first play of Magazine’s overtime session but a holding penalty backed Magazine up. A 1-yard carry by Dority followed by 6- and 4-yard carries by Billy Yang moved the ball to the 4.
Head coach Doug Powell sent on Layton Robinson for a 21-yard field goal which made it 17-14.
Brinkley got only one yard on their first down but after a delay of game penalty and a time out a reverse pass by Amos to Kesun Ward went for 14 yards and a touchdown to make it 20-17.
