Booneville won what will be the last Battle of the Bearcats for a while, 49-28 at Mena Friday night. The final score was not indicative of the game.
The Booneville Bearcats (7-0, 4-0 Conference 4A-4) scored on every first half possession, added a defensive touchdown on a 91-yard interception return by Matt Berry, and scored again the first time they had the ball in the second half and led 49-12 at that point.
Mena (3-4, 1-3) added two touchdown passes against Bearcat reserves, and a pair of two point conversions to set the final score but continued a home losing streak to Booneville that dates back to 1996.
Two Booneville touchdowns came via Cody Harrel, who ran only four times but gained 129 yards. Harrel missed the first quarter in a continued disciplinary matter but backup quarterback James Ray led the Bearcats to three touchdowns in three possessions. Ray also ran for 32 yards to give Bearcat quarterbacks 161 yards on the ground.
Justin Shackleford ran for two touchdowns and Bryson May and Josh Smith each also scored on the ground as the Bearcats ran over Mena to the tune of 175 first quarter yards and 294 in the first half.
