The Booneville senior boys’ track team got off to a strong start at the 4-4A district track meet last Thursday in Waldron as they qualified at least one athlete to the state meet in every field event. But when it came to the running, Dardanelle and Maumelle dominated as the Bearcats only qualified one runner.

The result was that Booneville slipped to third in the final standings.

It was a history-making meet for the Lady Bearcats as distance runner Riley Taylor became the first freshman from Booneville to qualify for the state track meet.

She accomplished that feat as part of the 3200-meter relay team which finished second. Taylor was the first leg of the relay which also included senior Lauren Lloyd and juniors Logan Lyle and Taylor Rhinehart.

The Lady Cats also turned in a third-place finish, behind Waldron and Maumelle.

Cody Harrel led the Bearcats by tying for first with Landon Vance in the high jump and finishing second in the long and triple jumps. He was second in the high-point competition to Dover distance runner Carson Miller.

Grant Wiggins won the pole vault, while Dalton Gray won the discus throw and finished second in the shot put. The only runner to qualify was sophomore Josh Smith, who was second in the 110-meter hurdles.

The only event win for the Lady Cats was by senior Hallie Davis, who ran away with the 300-meter hurdles. She was three seconds ahead of her nearest competition in winning that event at district for the third year in a row. Davis also qualified for the state meet in two other events with runner-up finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and pole vault.

Freshman Alley Vaught became an alternate qualifier for the state meet by finishing third in the discus. If one of the top two finishers does not go to the state meet, Vaught would take her place. The 4A state meet will be held in Heber Springs.
