NOTES: An MRI performed on Bearcat quarterback Brandon Ulmer on Tuesday revealed what was feared in a torn ACL, which will need surgery in a couple of weeks. Ulmer, a senior, is finished with his high school football career but hopes to be back in action for baseball season. He has committed to play baseball for Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
The next time the Bearcats, or their opponent, converts a third, or a fourth down, it will be the first time in 2018. The Bearcats held Clarksville to 0-of-11 on third downs, and another 0-of-4 on fourth down attempts last week. Although the Bearcats had 13 first downs to Clarksville’s 5, they were also 0-for-10 on third down plays and 0-for 3 on fourth down themselves.
The same statement can be made about passes: the next one completed by the Bearcats, or their opponent, will be the first this season. Clarksville’s Nicolas Buckner was 0-for-5 last week, with two interceptions and two sacks. Ulmer was 0-for-1 and his replacement, Evan Schlinker, was 0-for-3, throwing the ball and was also sacked twice.
THIS DATE IN BEARCAT HISTORY: Before last week Booneville had played eight games in the month of August, all on Aug. 31, and was 6-2 in those games. The first four games all ended in shutouts, three against Charleston and one in a loss to Ozark. Ironically, both Aug. 31 losses are to Ozark, the last coming in 2012.
Fullback Michael Emery ran for 140 yards in a 28-3 win over Mena on Aug. 31, 2007. Bryan Taylor, another fullback, had 139 yards on the ground at Yelleville-Summitt on Aug. 31, 2001.
Also, the Aug. 31, 1990 game, a 32-12 win over Prescott, was the first of 165 by Booneville with Kenneth Rippy as the head coach.
LAST NIGHT: The Booneville 7th Grade Bearcats (1-1) lost to Ozark 30-14 although Dax Goff ran for 109 yards and a touchdown. Ozark got 137 yards and two touchdowns from Gavin Gilbreth.
The Junior High Bearcats (0-1) did not play. They were scheduled to face Ozark as well but a lightning delay during the seventh grade game delayed the start for the junior high kickoff and another lightning delay lasted until after 8 p.m. when the game was postponed until week 10. The game is tentatively set for Tuesday, Oct. 30.
