The Booneville Junior High Bearcats made a goal line stand in the first quarter but allowed a pair of touchdowns on plays of greater than 35 yards in the second of a two quarter scrimmage, and lost to Dardanelle 14-0 Thursday.
The game, which was played on the turf at Russellville High School, started with the Sand Lizards driving to the Bearcat 3-yard line over the course of a little more than three minutes.
From there Blazen Jones broke up a Drew Vega pass, Cody Elliott tackled Vega for a yard loss, Randon Ray dropped Kaleb Metcalf after a 1-yard gain and Rocky Ross dropped Vega for a 5-yard loss on fourth down.
Starting from their 8, the Bearcats moved to the Dardanelle 25 only to surrender the ball on downs.
Ray started it with a 16-yard run, Mason Goers got 13 more and after carries of 4 and 20 yards by Ray, the ball was at the Sand Lizard 39. Ross picked up another first down before the drive stalled with 7:47 to play.
The Sand Lizards committed a holding penalty but had gotten back to a fourth-and-1 at their 33 when Vega went 67 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. The PAT failed.
After forcing a simulated punt, the Sand Lizards got a 37-yard Vega to Robert Millard touchdown pass and another Vega pass to Aiden Graham for a two point conversion and a 14-0 lead with 2:38 left.
Ray, who was removed at that point, finished with 45 yards rushing and 13 passing, hitting Goers on one of his two attempts.
Vega ran for 90 yards and threw for 74 for the Sand Lizards.
The Bearcats will open the 2018 season Thursday with a trip to Clarksville’s Metheny Field.
