Finishing with 24 points, Reagan Pickartz hit six 3 pointers at Mulberry Tuesday to lead the Lady Rattlers to a 59-45 win in Mulberry.
The Rattlers weren’t as fortunate. A free throw by Cody Stepusin gave Mulberry the lead with 0.2 seconds to go in a 59-58 Yellow Jacket win.
Magazine’s Friday games with Oark were postponed because of a rash of flu cases in Oark.
Lady Rattlers 59 Mulberry 45
The Lady Yellowjackets led by as many as six twice in the first quarter — after a 3 by Paige Childers and a basket by Madyson Hudspeth — but that was before Reagan Pickartz got started for the Lady Rattlers.
Pickartz hit her first shot with a foot on the line and Kelsey Krigbaum added a 3 to make it 12-11. Pickartz opened the second quarter scoring with two 3s and, after Mulberry cut it 17-15, hit another and it was 20-15.
Kiara Vasquez pushed the lead to eight before Pickartz hit her fourth 3 of the quarter to make it 25-15. Free throws accounted for the scoring for both teams until Pickartz hit her fifth 3 of the quarter and to make it 30-16.
A 3 by Pikcartz made it 33-18 and Lauren Ryan followed with her team’s eighth 3 of the night to make it 38-20. The 18-point lead was matched twice on baskets by Vasquez before Mulberry started to chip away.
With Amanda Jones handling the scoring load the Lady Yellow Jackets — she was 14-of-23 at the line on the night and scored 24 — would get as close as nine late in the game but a basket by Hannah Green and free throws by Krigbaum, Pickartz, Hannah Smith and Green kept the lead a comfortable one.
Besides her 24 points, Pickartz had five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Krigbaum finished with 10 points for the Lady Rattlers and Vasquez added nine. Hudspeth had nine for Mulberry.
Mulberry 59 Rattlers 58
The Rattler troubles could easily be tracked to the third quarter. Coming out of halftime with a 29-26 lead, the Rattlers scored on a pair of Matt Smith baskets and a 3 by Max Greb over the next eight minutes.
Mulberry meanwhile took advantage of a technical foul and Rick Reeves getting on fire to pull out to a double-digit lead with a 23-point quarter, 49-36. Reeves scored all 12 of his points in the game in the third quarter.
The Rattlers battled back behind Randon Baumgartner on the inside and Max Greb hitting three 3s, as well as a big 3 from Trevor Blake.
It was a 3 by Greb that tied the game for Magazine with 10 seconds to play before Cody Stepusin was sent to the line when a foul was called on a loose ball.
With his side in the double bonus and his teammates back at half court, Stepusin hit the first free throw for only his second, but the deciding point of the night.
Tyler Rice led Mulberry with 21 points but was shut down in the final quarter. Matt Smith led Magazine with 17 but also did not score in the fourth quarter and fouled out of the game.
Baumgartner scored 12, as did Greb for Magazine and Todd Brown had 13 for Mulberry.
The teams will meet again in Magazine of Feb. 2.
