Four days removed from their season opener the Magazine Rattlers pounded the Waldron JV team 32-0 last Tuesday on the new turf at Bulldog Stadium.
Held to 32 yards by Mount Ida, the Rattlers rolled up 364 in the midweek affair in Scout County, all but 34 coming on the ground.
The Rattlers broke on top with the opening possession as Luke Short went 20 yards for his first of two touchdowns to make it 6-0. As would be the case on four straight touchdowns, a try for two failed.
With their second possession the Rattlers avoided disaster by recovering a fumble but Trevor Blake was intercepted.
Two possessions later the Rattlers went in front 12-0 as Caleb Hyatt rumbled for 20 and Blake for 49 yards and his first of three touchdowns.
Though he would not figure into the scoring or turnover stats, Hyatt, a sophomore, ran 11 times for 147 yards and had a 16 tackle night, 12 of them solo for the Rattlers.
With four double-digit yardage plays on their next possession Magazine stretched the lead to 18-0. One of those plays was a 21-yard Blake to Tommy Perez pass that included a fumble that was recovered by the Rattlers Andy Yang to save the possession on the way to Blake’s 3-yard scoring run.
Magazine put the ball on the ground five times but got all but one of them back.
Waldron mounted its best drive to start the second half before a mishandled snap which Yang recovered.
From there Magazine went 78 yards with Short getting his second score on a run of 11 yards to make it 24-0. Short had 43 yards on just four carries.
Blake, who ran for 89 yards, scored his third touchdown on a 58-yard punt return with 0:45 left in the third quarter. He then hit Jacob Hall for the two point conversion and a 32-0 lead.
Waldron had three opportunities to avoid the shutout.
On the first Tommy Perez tackled Seth Hunt for a loss on fourth down and, after Dalton Sanders blocked a Blake punt,Charles Lewis recovered a Kennedy Rice fumble.
Zack Canada recovered a Xeng Yang fumble he also forced to give Waldron a final chance but Dakota Elms knocked down a fourth down pass by Hunt with 1:08 to play.
