Bearcats, Rattlers drop home openers

The Booneville Bearcats jumped to a 19-0 first quarter lead Friday night against Pea Ridge before the Blackhawks scored 29 unanswered points to hand the Bearcats a season opening loss.

The loss spoiled the start of the 50th season of Bearcat Stadium.

The 19-0 lead came on three fullback Carson Ray touchdowns. The first followed an interception return by Ethan Dobbs into Blackhawk territory, the second after a Dobbs punt return to the Blackhawk 5-yard line, and the third on a 41-yard run with 36 seconds left in the quarter.

The Blackhawks countered with three touchdowns from Drew Winn, though they were less than conventional. After a a 1-yard run by Jakota Sainsbury and a Bearcat fumble, a 2-yard run by Winn run made it 19-14 with 52 seconds left in the half.

The Blackhawks went in front on a fourth down play that began as a fumble but Winn went 22 yards after retrieving the ball and it was 22-19. Pea Ridge (2-0) put it away on a 46-yard Winn touchdown with 2:01 to play.

Winn ran for 136 yards on 24 carries besides the fumble advance. Ray finished with 88 yards on 17 carries for the Bearcats (0-1).

The Class 2A defending state champion Mount Ida Lions started their title defense by pounding the Magazine Rattlers in the opener for both schools Friday.

The lone highlight for the Rattlers was a 75-yard fumble return for a score by Andy Yang.
