The Volunteer Council at the Booneville Human Development Center is sponsoring the first annual Olympic Athletes Golf Tournament. It will take place at Cherokee Creek Country Club in Booneville on July 1.
The entry fee for the 3-person scramble format tournament is $150 per team. Each player may purchase two mulligans at $5 each, and hole sponsorships are available for $25. Lunch will be provided, and the tournament will pay 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each flight.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the BHDC Special Olympic athletes. The program is trying to expand its traveling and the number of sports it competes in, according to BHDC recreation director Chad Bokker.
“Every sport requires a certain dress code,” said Bokker. “Our clients can’t afford (to buy the needed clothes) at this time. These funds will go for getting the athletes the clothes required for each sport.”
Bokker went on to say that eventually BHDC athletes might compete at the winter Special Olympics games in sports such as floor hockey. “We would also like to put together a golf team and these funds will go toward the attire and equipment needed,” Bokker said.
“This is the first tournament of this kind and we would like to have a huge turnout,” Bokker added. “We have got a lot of support from the community and will continue to accept donations.”
