Booneville pitcher Whitney Tatum had a slow start to the season as control problems beset her against Van Buren and Atkins.

Consider the problems fixed.

Tatum whiffed 16 Charleston batters and added six against Danville, racking up 10 shutout innings as the LadyCats beat Charleston 9-0 and Danville 15-0. She also was productive at bat, hitting .571 on the week with five runs scored and four RBI.

Booneville was to have participated in the Clarksville tournament this past weekend, but the threat of bad weather induced Clarksville to hold the entire tournament on Friday and the LadyCats had to withdraw.

LadyCats 9 Charleston 0

Booneville put up a first-inning run as Bailey Denton led off by reaching on an error. Shelby Posey then beat out an infield hit; Denton was forced at third on a Whitney Tatum grounder but the return throw eluded the first baseman, allowing Posey to score. The LadyCats added two in the third as Denton reached with a one-out double and scored on a Posey single. A Tatum hit sent Posey to third and she scored on Olivia Tomlin’s sacrifice fly.

Tatum was cruising through four innings, striking out eight, and the LadyCats broke it open in the fifth inning. Denton, Posey and Tatum hit consecutive doubles, scoring two runs. Mariah Reagan then drew a walk and a Tomlin grounder got through the shortstop, loading the bases. Hannah Gregory delivered a single to score Tatum and Beth Wilkinson finished it off with a two-RBI single. The final run came when Tatum’s fly ball was dropped by the Charleston right fielder and the Booneville pitcher reached third, with Reagan’s sac fly scoring Booneville’s ninth run.

Posey went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in two; Denton had two doubles, and Tatum struck out 16—half of them looking—and was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while giving up only one hit. Wilkinson also had two hits and two RBIs.

LadyCats 15 Danville 0

The first six Booneville batters reached base, the first two without benefit of a hit. Bailey Denton led off with a walk and stole second; Shelby Posey swung at strike three but the ball got away and the freshman beat the throw, Denton reaching third. Both runners were chased home by Whitney Tatum’s triple. Mariah Reagan followed with an RBI single and reached second when the right fielder fumbled the ball. Olivia Tomlin followed with a single and Beth Wilkinson knocked in courtesy runner Brooklyn May, with Tomlin coming in on a wild pitch.

The top of the order led it off again in the second inning and this time the first six runners reached. Denton started it with a triple and Posey drew a walk before Tatum delivered an RBI single. Reagan also walked before a Tomlin ground ball evaded both the shortstop and the left fielder, scoring Tatum and May. Another Danville error on a ball hit by Wilkinson scored Tomlin and still another miscue allowed Jessica Parrish to reach and Wilkinson to score. AshLeah Craig delivered the last run with a RBI single.

Errors once again led to Booneville runs in the third; the Lady Little Johns had seven miscues in all. Tatum reached on one error and Reagan’s fly to left was dropped. Casey Townsend, batting for Tomlin, walked to load the bases and Carli Haller smacked one to right field to score two runs. Kasidey Thompson ended the game when her infield hit plated Townsend with the 15th run.

Tatum was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI with Denton going 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. May scored three runs as a courtesy runner for Reagan. In addition to her batting, Tatum struck out six batters and gave up only two hits.
