Opening the season in a tournament against host team Waldron last week Magazine head coach Randy Loyd was especially cognizant of the new pitching rule.
The Bulldogs took a 12-2 six inning win and the Rattlers returned to Scott county to face Mena on Thursday with all their top three hurlers available.
Waldron 12 Rattlers 2
Loyd allowed Randon Baumgartner, Shaffer Loyd (0-1) and Trevor Blake all the maximum 30 pitches Wednesday which would allow them to retake the mound during a Thursday double header.
For Baumgartner that meant four total outs. Loyd and Blake managed to complete two innings each before Pacen Roberson finished it for the Rattlers.
Magazine got back-to-back first inning hits from Matt Smith and Baumgartner with one out but Shaffer Loyd popped out to first and Austin Canada flew out to left to end the inning.
After Baumgartner surrendered a first inning run on a Nathan Hatten double, the Rattlers took a 2-1 lead in the third. There had been a man retired at the plate and Smith and Baumgartner had their second hits in front of Shaffer Loyd being hit by a pitch.
Colton Young tied it with a single to right and a walk drawn by Roberson made it 2-1.
That would be about it for Magazine as the Rattlers were hitless the rest of the way.
Loyd would allow three runs, Blake three more and Roberson was touched up for five before the game ended early.
Freshman Payton Brown got the win for Waldron.
Rattlers 12 Mena 8
Mena scored five times in the top of the seventh inning before Colton Young finally nailed down the win. The Rattlers had built a 12-3 lead before Randon Baumgartner departed after 27 pitches over which he allowed two hits and a walk, but struck out three.
Magazine (1-1) took command early due to Bearcat generosity. Trevor Blake reached on an error and after Matt Smith singled and Baumgartner did the same to load the bases Shaffer Loyd walked to force in a run, Austin Canada lifted a fly ball for another, a ground ball by Young made it 3-0 and Loyd would score a fourth run on a wild pitch with Pacen Roberson at the plate.
Two innings later it was 12-0.
Smith (3-for-3) had his second hit and there were two Mena errors in a two run second.
In the third a two out outfield error scored two runs, Smith doubled home a run, Baumgartner singled him home, and singles by Loyd and Canada made it 12-0.
Loyd (1-1) pitched into the fourth and Trevor Blake was tagged for three runs in 29 pitches before Baumgartner kept the Bearcats at bay until there was one out in the sixth and they got to Young, making his first varsity appearance, for two hits and five runs that led to five runs.
