Keaira Thomas kept the Magazine in the 2A-4 West district third place game in the third quarter Saturday afternoon. Hannah Smith made sure Magazine won it in the final quarter.
After managing just two points in the second quarter the third-seeded Lady Rattlers trailed four-seed Mountainburg 17-10.
Smith started the second half scoring and after a basket by Thomas just 13 seconds later the Lady Rattlers (16-14) were within 17-14. After Britton Peters hit a free throw Thomas scored again to cut it to 18-16.
Britton Peters, who scored 14 points, made it five straight points for her side — on the way to eight — and it was back to a seven point lead at 23-16 with 4:54 left in the third quarter.
Another Thomas bucket was countered by a 3 from Britton Peters and Mountainburg had its largest lead at 26-18.
Smith cut it to 26-20 on the next possession and two Thomas baskets later it was back to a one possession game at 26-24 with 1:25 left in the quarter.
Two Madelyn Beasley free throws made it 28-24 in favor of the Lady Dragons.
The Lady Rattlers had chances to cut into the lead but Racheal Phillips and Thomas both missed a pair of free throws in a span of 2.3 seconds. Mountainburg’s Emily France also missed twice before the quarter ended.
Smith scored on an assist from Thomas to start the final quarter and a minute later Thomas tied the game at 28. Thomas led all players with 16 points.
Smith then scored twice in a span of 22 seconds and Magazine had an 8-0 run and a 32-28 lead prompting head coach Zach Dean to take a time out.
The pace slowed but two Addison Peters free throws made it 32-30 with 4:54 to go but Beasley missed with 4:15 left before Addison Peters was able to tie it at 32-32 with 2:31 to play.
Kia Yang and Thomas both missed front ends of a one-and-one and it was still tied until Phillips hit one of two free throws with 3:25 left to make it 33-32.
Rylii Hammond hit two free throws with 2:50 left and Mountainburg was back in front, 34-33. It stayed that way until Smith hit a six-footer with 17 seconds to go and Magazine was up 35-34.
Smith scored all 12 of her points in the second half.
The Lady Rattlers had to survive two misses from inside the paint in the final 5.5 seconds to earn the three seed in the Class 2A West Regional and will face Conway Christian at 4 p .m. today (Wednesday) in Pangburn.
Lady Rattlers 41 Lavaca 36
The Lady Rattlers did not have a single fourth quarter basket but scored 11 points at the free throw line, though it took 20 opportunities to make that happen, and kept the Lady Golden Arrows at bay.
After Lavaca’s Mairady Dempsey and Breanna Dorsey combined to hit three free throws a Magazine lead as large as 15 was down to 30-26 with 6:28 to play. Two Racheal Phillips free throws got the Lady Rattlers back to a six point lead on the next possession and the Lady Rattlers were in the double bonus the rest of the night.
Still Lavaca cut it to 32-29 on a basket by Dorsey, then with the game still a one possession game, the Lady Golden Arrows missed four straight free throws and it was 33-29 with 4:43 left.
Two more by Phillips, who led all players with 15 points, gave Magazine a 35-29 lead and Hannah Smith offset a Lavaca Free throw for a 36-30 lead.
Phillips had one more but Thomas missed with when the lead was 37-32. In the final minute Aubrie Davis twice hit one of two to get it to 39-32 49-4 seconds remaining, but Kaylin Rose and Hope Headley scored four points in a span of 15 seconds to make it 39-36 with 25.4 seconds left.
Thomas, who had a 14 rebound night with her seven points, and Smith had single points to push it back to 41-36.
Magazine was 14 of 30 from the line in the second half and 18 of 38 for the night.
The Lady Rattlers had taken control of the game with a 13-0 first quarter that started with a 3 by Kia Yang and a buzzer beating layup after a steal by Kelsey Krigbaum.
After Lavaca scored the first points of the second quarter, the Lady Rattlers maintained a double digit lead throughout the rest of the first half. A 3 by Kalyn Bryan made it 16-5 with 5:26 left in the half and another gave the Lady Rattlers a 15 point lead, 22-7 with at the 3:05 mark.
A Phillips conventional three point play had the Lady Rattlers up 28-19 with 2:12 left in the third quarter before Lavaca cut the lead to 28-23 on a basket by Dempsey 1:10 later.
JC Westside 42 Lady Rattlers 30
The top seeded Lady Rebels’ Kelsey Criss put on a 3 points shooting clinic in the third quarter but Magazine conuntered with 3s by Kalyn Bryan and Kelsey Krigbaum and the inside play of Hannah Smith, Racheal Phillips and Keaira Thomas to get within 33-30 with 5:06 to play in the game.
The Lady Rattlers then had three straight possessions with the ability to tie the game or cut the lead to one. Bryan had her shot blocked the first time and Smith and Thomas couldn’t get shots to fall.
Westside then ran off the next nine points of the game to win comfortably. Criss, who had 19 points and nine rebounds started it with a bucket with 3:18 left and she also hit three free throws in the final minute.
Thomas led Magazine with nine points and seven rebounds. Ashlyn Stricklyn and Maddison Shelton both scored eight for Westside.
Westside led 8-2 after one first quarter as Magazine managed only a Thomas basket.
The Lady Rattlers got within five on three occasions in the second quarter, the last on a basket by Phillips before seeing the lead grow to 10. A free throw by Phillips made it 19-10 at the half.
The teams combined for seven 3s in the third quarter.
