Hector scored one point in the entire first quarter against Magazine last Tuesday night. They scored 51 more over the next three quarters and won easily, 52-28.

That gave Hector a sweep of the senior high games of the three game set that began with Magazine taking a win in a junior high boys affair.

After quarter Magazine was up 4-1 on buckets by James Burr and Matt Smith. Hector’s only point of the quarter was a Jadon Graham. In fact the Wildcats didn’t score from the field until a loose ball scramble and a basket by Braxton Hendrix made it 6-3.

The Wildcats took their first lead on a basket by Graham, who scored 11 points on the night and, after a Burr free throw tied it at 9-9 went ahead for good on an offensive rebound and basket by Tanner Gaines.

Gaines scored three second chance baskets in the second quarter, including the final points of the half and Hector was up 15-11.

A Smith basket got Magazine within 15-13 early in the third quarter and a 3 by Deven Chappell got to it to 20-16 after an alley oop dunk by Gaines.

Following the dunk up with two more baskets, Gaines would score a game high 18 on the night to go along with 10 rebounds.

Hector stretched the lead to 29-16 before a Randon Baumgartner basket interrupted the Wildcat run, but Hector added a Graham basket and a bank shot 3 pointer by Logan Smedley to lead 34-18 after three quarters.

The final quarter started with a steal and basket by Gaines, on which an intentional foul was called. That started a six point possession as Gaines added the and-one free throw and two for the intentional foul. He was then fouled on a rebound and hit one of two more and it was 40-18.

Max Greb accounted for the Rattler highlights in the final quarter with two 3s and Justin Mott contributed a basket.

Burr led Magazine with seven points.

Hector 48 Lady Rattlers 43

Hector led by as much as seven in the first half and actually got it as high as nine in the third quarter before the Lady Rattlers climbed back within two.

It was a four point game at 45-41 when Hector was given a time out during a scramble for a loose ball and the Lady Wildcats got two free throws from Paige Lee to extend the lead and went on to win by five.

A Keaira Thomas bucket tied the game at 2 and Magazine led 5-2 after three Kia Yang free throws and the lead would change hands six times in the quarter, the last being on a 3 by Yang.

Hector was up 13-10 until Racheal Phillips cut it to one and started a short 6-0 run that included baskets by Thomas and Hannah Smith to give Magazine a 16-13 lead.

Hector scored the next eight points and never trailed again. The Lady Wildcats ran the lead to 28-21 but Thomas cut it back to the eventual difference with a basket before the intermission.

Phillips and Smith both cut it to 5 with baskets and a long 3 from Kalyn Bryan cut the deficit to 34-30 before a bucket by Thomas, who scored 10 points, cut it to 36-32 after three quarters.

Smith, who led the Lady Rattlers with 11 points and nine rebounds, and Phillips both scored again in the final quarter to cut it to our before a 3 b Kelsey Krigbaum made it 42-39.

It got even tighter on a backdoor drive and layup by Yang to make it 43-41 before a pair of free throws by Cassidy Haley gave Hector some breathing room before the time out was awarded a possession later.

Paige Lee led Hector with 15 and Haley and Kelsey Dixon both scored 10.

Jr. Rattlers 33 Hector 24

The Rattlers were down 11-5 in the first quarter proceeded to go on a 12-0 run that didn’t end until the third quarter.

Jacob Hall started it with a basket before the first quarter ended and started the second quarter with a bucket to make ti 11-9 in favor of Hector.

A single free throw by Xeng Yang and two by Caleb Hyatt gave the Rattlers the lead. Another Hall bucket and another Hyatt free throw had Magazine up 15-11 at the half and Tatum Scott scored his first basket of the night to make it 17-11 in the third quarter.

Hector battled to within 19-18 later in the quarter but Scott scored again and Hyatt scored but couldn’t add the and-one and it was 23-18 after three quarters — the Rattlers were up 23-18.

Scott, who finished with 10, scored Magazine’s first six points of the final quarter to open a double digit lead at 29-18 and Hyatt scored again to make it a second 12-0 run and it was 31-18. Hyatt led the Rattlers with 11 points and had nine rebounds.
