Looking only at the final scores you could believe Scranton dominated Magazine from start to finish Monday night but that wouldn’t be completely accurate.
Magazine was actually within one possession late in the second quarter of both games.
Scranton 28 Jr. Lady Rattlers 15
With 39.8 seconds left in the half Taryn Leslie hit one of two free throws and the Lady Rockets had an 8-6 lead. On the next possession Joshlyn Terry hit a 3 to give Scranton some breathing room and after a Magazine turnover Terry closed the half with another one and suddenly it was 14-6.
The lead grew to 18-8 less than two minutes into the second half before a Kiara Vasquez free throw and a basket by Jordyn Krigbaum cut it back to 18-13 with 1:48 left in the third quarter.
Scranton got a 3 from Kayla Siebenmorgen to make it 21-13 and went on to run off 10 straight points before Chloe Robinson got a shot to fall at the buzzer for Magazine’s only points of the fourth quarter.
Vasquez led Magazine, who fell to 6-8, 3-2 in their only floor appearance of the week, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Terry had eight and Siebenmorgen seven for Scranton.
Scranton 43 Jr. Rattlers 22
There were five lead changes in the first quarter alone which ended with Magazine up 8-7 as Jacob Hall had scored twice on assists from Caleb Hyatt and had assisted Hyatt as well.
A conventional three-point play by Hyatt made it 11-7 but two minutes later Hyatt converted one of two free throws to tie the game at 12. He scored again with 2:05 left in the quarter to get Magazine within 15-14.
At that point Dakota Pickartz had scored every point for the Rockets. Cesar Rodriguez hit twice over a span of 57 seconds and Scranton was up 19-14 at the intermission.
Rodriguez and Pickartz continued to be most of the Scranton offense in the third quarter while the lead grew to 27-14 before Hyatt finally scored to end a drought of 5:59 over two quarters.
Hyatt completed a 12 point night with two free throws at the 5:18 mark of the final quarter but Scranton led by 16 at that point and was cruising.
Pickartz hit another 3 and finished with 20 and Rodriguez added 12.
After the Rocket lead grew to 25, Tsim Neej Vang and William King closed out the scoring.
