With 2:32 to play in the third quarter Friday, Austin Rhoades completed a three-point play and was on a personal 7-0 run in a game Western Yell County had controlled throughout.
The Wolverines were up 35-20, on the verge of spoiling Magazine’s homecoming night.
Instead, the Rattlers went on a 16-0 run to take their first lead of the night and eventually claimed a 40-38, literally last-second thriller.
After Rhoades gave WYC its biggest lead of the night Matt Smith scored on Magazine’s next possession. Shaffer Loyd and James Burr added baskets and the deficit was single digits, 36-25 after three quarters.
Randon Baumgartner scored with 7:00 left but couldn’t convert the and-one. Burr hit again 37 seconds later to make it 35-30.
Smith scored at the 5:40 and 4:37 marks and the run was 14-0 to get the Rattlers within 35-34.
Baumgartner missed the front end of a one and one but the Rattlers got the ball back on a Baumgartner rebound. Smith was fouled 43 seconds later but he too missed the front end of the one-and-one.
Smith then picked a Western Yell players pocket and slammed home a go-ahead score giving Magazine its first lead of the night with 3:23 to play.
The Wolverines finally ended the drought at the 2:32 mark, exactly eight minutes after Rhoades had given WYC a seemingly safe lead. Ace Walker got the front end of a one-and-one to tie it at 36 but couldn’t give the Wolverines the lead.
WYC would retake the lead with 25 seconds to go on a Rhoades basket but fouled Baumgartner on the other end and Baumgartner hit both to tie it again at 38 with 8.6 to play.
Out of a Western Yell time out with 4.0 left Loyd intercepted the inbound pass and was headed for a layup when he was leveled in what was called an intentional foul with 1.0 left.
Loyd hit both free throws, for the winner – an inbound pass was contested in the back court as time expired.
Smith led the Rattlers with 17 and Baumgartner added 12. Rhoades had 15 for Western Yell.
Western Yell scored the first eight points of the night in less than three minutes before Smith finally got the Rattlers on the board.
The Wolverines would stretch the lead to double digits before the quarter ended.
At the 3:09 mark of the second quarter Andrew Ridenour gave the Wolverines a 25-11 lead but Magazine was able to get it to 27-17 by halftime.
The Rattlers further trimmed Yell’s lead to 28-20 on a pair of Smith buckets before the seven straight Rhoades points made it 35-20.
Lady Rattlers 64 Western Yell 31
It was a game for almost three minutes. The game was tied at 3-3 after a free throw by Angel Bowden and Magazine led only 4-3 after one by Racheal Phillips.
Phillips missed the second free throw but Keaira Thomas rebound it and put it in for a 6-3 lead.
Less than four minutes later it was 16-3 after a Hannah Smith three point play.
Yell got within 18-7 on an Alivia Fisher basket at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter but before the Lady Wolverines scored again it was 35-7.
The lead got to 30 on a four point play by Kalyn Bryan – fouled on her third 3 – and with 1:14 left in the half Bryan hit her fourth to make it 44-11. A fifth made it 47-12 and Thomas scored on a tip in at the halftime buzzer to make it 49-12.
The starters’ night was done, for the most part, but Ashtyn Vanderhaak hit four free throws and Lauren Ryan hit a 3 in the third but Yell got within 57-28 to avoid a running clock.
A couple of Marlee Littleton free throws 38 seconds into the final quarter took care of that and, in an attempt to have Bryan match six 3s by her sister and McKenzie Loyd on homecoming night, Bryan returned to the floor.
She missed one attept and was fouled on another. Including shooting technical foul shots and being fouled after a miss, Bryan hit five free throws to finish with 23.
Smith had 10 off the bench for Magazine. Anna Hall led WYC with 13.
Jr. Rattlers 43 Western Yell 38
Western Yell erased a 29-24 lead in the final 1:30 of the third quarter to tie the game.
Caleb Hyatt, who had set since the 5:22 mark of the third quarter, returned to the floor but fouled out just 20 seconds into the final quarter but Magazine scored the first 12 points of the final quarter and went on to the win.
Tatum Scott scored the first four points of the run and after a Nate Bryan three point play and a basket by Jacob hall, had the basket that made it 40-29 with 1:29 to play. Scott finished with 18.
After a Scott free throw made it 41-31 with 1:08 left WYC cut it to 41-36 in the final minute but Ashton Droemer hit two free throws with 9.4 seconds left to extend it back to a seven point lead.
WYC led almost the entire first quarter until a basket by Hyatt tied it at 9-9. The game was tied again at 11 on a Hyatt bucket – he scored 10 – before the Rattlers opened a 22-14 edge with 1:32 left in the half.
Yell got it to 22-18 on a basket by Jonathan Diaz but Scott scored the next trip and it was 24-18 at the half.
Diaz led the Wolverines with 16.
