FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas defensive backfield coach Paul Rhoads has been elevated to defensive coordinator, Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema announced on Twitter late Monday night.

“It was our first team meeting tonight & awesome reaction as I waited to tell our crew that @CoachRhoadsUA is our new DC,” Bielema tweeted.

Rhoads replaces Robb Smith who tendered his resignation last week to become the defensve coordinator at Minnesota.

Rhoads joined Bielema’s staff in 2016 after head coaching Iowa State from 2009-2015.

A three-year 1986-88 letterman and graduate of Missouri Western, Rhoads previously was defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2008 and the University of Pittsburgh from 2000 through 2007.

His first coaching job was as a graduate assistant in 1989 and ’90 at Utah State and Ohio State in 1991. He was passing game coordinator at Pacific from 1992-94 and coached defensive backs from 1995 through 1999 at Iowa State.
