Homecoming night could not have turned out much better in Booneville Tuesday night.
Originally set for last Friday against Mansfield, the festivities were moved to Tuesday when inclement weather closed school and moved the games to Wednesday night.
That meant conference foe Waldron became the opponent, or actually became the victim as both the Bearcats (11-5, 4-0) and Lady Cats (3-8, 1-2) won big.
Bearcats 60 Waldron 33
Twice Waldron coach Josh Brown called a second half time out after his own team had scored. Both times it was coach Ronnie Denton’s Bearcats who took over out of the play stopage.
A 13-point Bearcat lead had been cut to eight, 36-28, at the 3:23 mark of the third quarter when the Bulldogs took a time out. When Caden Yarborough hit two free throws with 1:17 to play in the quarter it was a then-highest 15 point cushion at 43-28.
It was 46-30 when the Bulldogs got a bucket to get within 14 and out of a time out with 5:48 to go, the Bearcats did turn the ball over but successive steals and layups by Adam Haney and Yarborough pushed it to 50-32, all in a span of 50 seconds.
Yarborough had 14 points and seven assists and Blakeley Cobb had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Knight had 10 points as well. Jessie Chrisman had 12 points for Waldron.
Lady Cats 42 Waldron 28
As was the case in the boys game, when Waldron made a run, the LadyCats answered.
Kassidy Thompson had two 3s in the first half and the lead was as big as nine but Waldron was within 16-10 before Beth Wilkinson scored just before the buzzer to make it 18-10.
The lead was double digits much of the rest of the way but Waldron did get it to 8 before a 6-0 run pushed it to 34-20 with under seven minutes to go.
Bailey Denton scored 14 points and had 8 rebounds for the LadyCats and Wilkinson added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
