For the second straight year Magazine beat Booneville during the Christmas break in a consolation game of the Bill Frye Classic in Mansfield.
Today it was the Rattlers (9-4) holding Booneville scoreless from the floor for over four minutes down the stretch while taking control of the game.
After Adam Haney hit his third 3 of the game he had 14 points and the Bearcats were up 43-40 with 4:07 to go. However, Magazine scored the next eight points.
James Burr hit two free throws and scored on an assist from Matt Smith in the run but it was two free throws by Randon Baumgartner that gave the Rattlers the lead and two more by Max Greb made it 48-43 with 1:47 to play.
Burr, who played with four fouls from the 3:10 mark of the third quarter, finished with 19 points. Greb came off the bench and hit two big 3s in the first half and was in double figures with 10 before fouling out.
Booneville (9-5), who played four games in the tournament and went 2-2, cut it back to a one possession game at 48-45 with single free throws by Caden Yarborough and Dalton Parrish, the later coming with 51.1 seconds to go.
Smith, who scored 14, got lose for a layup on a feed from Shaffer Loyd with 38 seconds left and, after misses by the Bearcats, Burr and Smith hit one of two free throws each.
Following a steal by Smith an intentional foul resulted in Smith making one more free throw to make 53-45. Yarborough got a shot to fall just before the final horn to set the final.
Magazine will next play at Hackett on Jan. 3. Booneville will next play Tuesday when they host Cedarville.
