Mountainburg started four first quarter possessions at midfield or better and had a punt return for a touchdown to open a 35-0 lead on the way to a 49-6 win over Magazine Friday.

The Rattlers started in a hole their first possession when a kickoff sailed deep but bounced backward after it hit forcing Colton Young to field the ball.

Magazine (1-6, 1-5 Conference 2A-4) got a first down on a pass from Trevor Blake to Austin Canada but eventually had to punt and Mountainburg took over at midfield.

Two plays later the Dragons were still there but on third down Quency Pickley threw a touchdown pass to Elijah Wilson to make it 7-0.

The Rattlers started at their 23 – their best of the quarter – and managed another first down on a run by Blake before Blake was picked off at midfield.

After Mountainburg scored in three plays to go up 14-0, with Dillon Jones scoring the touchdown, the Rattlers had a penalty on the kickoff and started at their own 6-yard line.

A punt return to the Rattler 36 preceded a three play drive to make it 21-0 and after a touchback and Blake’s second interception the Dragons needed to go just 22 yards to make it 28-0.

After being forced to punt again, on a possession that started at their 16, Magazine surrendered a punt return touchdown to make it 35-0.

The ensuing kickoff was run back to the Magazine 24 and after a 1-yard gain the quarter finally ended.

After Roy Williams ran for a first down Mountainburg would finally start a possession on their side of the field, but then went 65 yards, overcoming a sack by Beau Shott, to make it 42-0.

Shott then ran the kickoff back to the Magazine 49 and the Rattlers crossed midfield for the first time, reaching the Mountainburg 37 on a pass from Blake to Randon Baumgartner.

But with Blake on the sideline Pacen Roberson was intercepted.

Williams caused a fumble that Baumgartner recovered the next play and Roberson’s second interception made it three turnovers on three downs.

Mountainburg (6-3, 5-3) then scored the next play to go up 49-0 with 22 seconds left in the half.

The Dragons turned the ball over on downs at the Magazine 20 on a fourth down stop by Blake and, on what would be the Rattlers’ only possession of the second half, Magazine scored in 11 plays.

Blake and Canada hooked up for 15 to end the third quarter and the Rattlers were at the Mountainburg 26. A fourth down carry by Williams moved the ball to the 3 and Phillip Underwood got into the end zone for his first score a down later.

Mountainburg drove the the Magazine 8 before getting into victory formation to close out the Rattlers.
