The Magazine Junior High Rattlers turned a conference championship game into a blowout Thursday night at Diamondback Stadium.

With a punishing ground game that saw Magazine (8-0, 5-0 Conference 2A-4) accumulate 298 yards, the Rattlers took down previously unbeaten Mountainburg 38-6.

Caleb Hyatt led the way with 20 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns but it was quarterback Xeng Yang doing even more scoring damage with three touchdowns in his six carries for 93 yards.

Magazine scored on every possession until taking a knee to end it.

The opening drive would cover just 45 yards when Mountainburg’s onside kick stopped well short of the 10 yards needed to steal a possession. Yang scored from the 2 on the eighth play of the drive and Hyatt added the two point conversion to make it 8-0.

Mountainburg kept the ball the rest of the opening quarter, got a break on what looked like a fumble but turned the ball over on downs at the Rattler 21 on a stuff by Hyatt and Kobe Faughn.

Tatum Scott, who had 58 yards on nine carries, got the Rattlers out to the 36 but lost a yard on the next play. Yang went 65 yards on the next play and with Hyatt’s second two pointer it was 16-0.

After forcing a Mountainburg punt the Rattlers went 78 yards with Hyatt doing most of the work and scoring the touchdown from the 4. Scott added the extra two for a 24-0 lead just before the half.

Scott also made sure it stayed 24-0 with an interception on the final play of the half.

Another Dragon punt started the second half and again the Dragons could not stop the Rattlers. A 70-yard drive to Yang’s 6-yard touchdown and Hyatt’s third conversion made it 32-0.

Mountainburg then scored in just two plays. Scott saved a touchdown on a 44 yard gain but the Dragons scored on the next play to make it 32-6. Faughn broke up a two point conversion pass attempt.

Hyatt added a 61-yard kickoff return to the Dragon 9 to his final junior high home game and he also scored from the 1 to finish the short drive to make it 38-6 with 3:49 left in the game.

While Mountainburg’s season ended Thursday the Rattlers did have one game remaining, which is set for Tuesday night against Western Yell County in Havana.
