Barring something bizarre the Magazine Rattlers will miss the playoffs for the third straight season after a 6-0 overtime loss to Johnson County Westside Friday night at Diamondback Stadium.
Twice early in the game the Rattlers turned the ball over on downs in the red zone but largely Magazine was a victim of poor field position throughout the game.
Discounting the overtime when they started at the 10, the best starting field position the Rattlers had was when they started at their 33-yard line following the opening kickoff.
The Rattlers (1-5, 1-4) got a Troy Blake to Randon Baumgartner pass to help move the chains once but punted to the Rebel 34 with that possession.
Westside strung together five first downs, converting a fourth down once after having a penalty negate a conversion. The Rebels would eventually fail on a fourth down when Charles Lewis broke up a pass in the end zone.
That gave Magzine possession at their own 14 and the Rattlers put together a drive to the Rebel 23 but a fourth down pass to Pacen Roberson got 7 when it needed to get 9 and Westside took over at the 16.
Westside was able to move the ball again until Baumgartner broke up a third down pass to force a punt, which rolled dead at the Magazine 14.
A disastrous possession saw Blake punt only 11 yards to the 21. From there the Rattler defense got back-to-back 2-yard loss tackles from Beau Shott and Austin Canada and a solo by Greg Hyatt. Baumgartner picked off a third down pass to end the threat.
Westside started the second half with four straight first downs before turning the ball over on downs at the Magazine 14 thanks to a stop by Luke Short and Lewis.
Magazine would have to punt again and a 10-yard punt return, coupled with a 15-yard penalty got the Rebels to the Magazine 24. The ball was at the 19 after a Rebel penalty and needing 18 yards for a first down the pass went into the end zone and Baumgartner got his second interception.
Baumgartner caught a pass for one first down before the Rattlers were forced to punt and Westside was at Magazine’s 38 after a 6-yard punt.
The Rattler defense again got a stop with a turnover as Short recovered a fumble at the Magazine 21.
Two passes to Baumgartner moved the Rattlers to the 44 and another pass that looked like a sure six points slipped through Colton Young’s fingers.
Westside’s final possession of regulation ended at the Rattlers 33 with 55 seconds to go and Blake did connect with Young for 19 and Magazine reached the Rebel 37 before a sack on the final play.
Having lost the coin flip the Rattlers went on offense first in overtime and a second down 11-yard loss by Roberson made it third-and-goal from the 20 and a tipped pass by Blake was intercepted.
Alan Rice scored on the first play of the Rebel possession of overtime to end the game.
The Rattlers will be on the road this Friday, visiting Mountainburg. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
