Charles Ray Southerland of Booneville, Arkansas passed away on April 28, 2017 in Booneville, Arkansas, shortly after celebrating his 80th birthday a month prior. He passed peacefully, surrounded in love by his wife and daughter.

Born on March 23, 1937 in Gans, Oklahoma to William Albert and Pearl E. (Sandlin) Southerland, he is survived by his wife Joyce Southerland of Booneville, Arkansas; his daughter Amanda Birnbaum and 5 year-old grandson Benjamin Birnbaum of Stamford, CT; and one sister, Juanita “Peggy” Jones of Selma, California. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Nadine Harvell and Hazel Allen; five brothers: Alfred Henry Southerland; Albert Southerland, Jr.; William Clifford Southerland; Robert (Jack) Southerland; and Johnny Southerland; and many other extended relatives and friends.

Charley, as he was often called, served three years in the United States Air Force and had a distinguished 36-year career at Whirlpool in Fort Smith, Arkansas, retiring in 2000. He was a faithful member and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Booneville, Arkansas. At times during his life he loved bird hunting, golfing, fishing, yard work and studying his Bible. His favorite thing in the world was spending time with his family as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 10:00 am at Roberts Funeral Chapel in Booneville. Visitation was Monday, May 1, 2017 at Roberts Funeral Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A private graveside service will be held at Carolan Cemetery in Booneville.
