U.S. Veteran James Alvin Mathews, 72, of Magazine, Arkansas, passed from this life on Friday, March 3, 2017 in his home near Magazine. He was born March 21, 1944 in Houston, Texas to John Thomas and Ophelia (Stephenson) Mathews.
James was a custom builder for many years and was a farmer and raised cattle. He served his country in the National Guard and was a deacon of the First Baptist Church in Magazine for many years.
He loved reading and studying the Bible and teaching Bible study. He loved helping others, traveling Arkansas and spending time with his family especially the grandkids. He is preceded in death by his father, John Thomas Mathews; a sister, Alma Murphy and an infant brother.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Magazine with burial in Ellington Cemetery in Magazine, under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Agnes “Tinker” Mathews of the home; one daughter, Myra Nicholas and husband Robby of Magazine; one son, John Mathews of Magazine; mother, Ophelia Mathews of Magazine; one sister, Virginia Mathews of Magazine; one brother, Robert Mathews of Magazine; five grandchildren, Mychaela, Kutter, Trace, Callie, and Jayma; other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers: Bruce Staton, Joe Cheney, Butch Bird, Eric Jones, Clifton Beavers, and Billy Featherston.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday evening at the First Baptist Church in Magazine.
