Logan County Sheriff Steve Smith survived the challenge posed by two opponents and avoided a runoff for the Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s Party Primary and Non-Partisan Judicial election.

Smith goes on to face Republican nominee Boyd D. Hicks in November. Hicks easily defeated challenger Joe Gilliam to win the GOP nomination Tuesday.

Also, for the second conseutive election, more ballots were cast in the Republican primary than in the Democratic primary. There were 1,976 votes cast in the Republican primary compared to 1,617 in the Democratic primary. Tuesday’s turnout was a little higher than expected, with 3,662 ballots cast, or 31.89 percent of the county’s 11,483 registered voters.
