For several hours last Thursday it looked like a recent trend of every third year of Booneville High School seniors graduating in the school’s gymnasium, rather than on its football field, would hold serve.
A school district Facebook post indicated with an 80 percent chance of rain and about a 50 percent chance at 8 p.m., when exercises were to be held, the ceremony was moved inside and the gym was prepared.
That looked to maintain a history in which the 2004, 2007 and 2010 — the only other gymnasium graduation since one in 1992 had occurred in 2000 — seniors graduated outside.
However, although there were very brief sprinkles throughout the day the rain was never an issue. So, at about 4:30 p.m. — about three hours before to-be graduates were to have reported — the decision on where to hold commencement exercises, was changed.
The ceremony was going back to the field. Of course the chairs and the rest of the setup were going as well so school officials hurriedly prepared again for the ceremony.
It was cloudy and a bit muggy but the rain held off to interrupt, at least for now, the two outside, one inside trend.
Still, if you are, or know a freshman, it might not be a bad idea to plan ahead.
