Hot Springs Village men’s teams took top honors in two divisions in the USTA 65 and over tournament held Oct. 5-7 at the Coronado Tennis Center.
In the 3.5 division, captain Rick Meyers’ squad needed to win all three matches against an undefeated team from Jonesboro on the final day to secure the title.
The pairings of Bill Nordby-Gary Strakshus, Allen Holmes-Ken Jeffries, and Bob Montgomery-Pete Archbold each rang up victories, advancing the HSV team to the Southern sectional tournament to be held in Hilton Head, North Carolina in November.
“It was especially gratifying to see the team step up in the final match with the championship on the line,” Myers said.
Jack Notter’s HSV 3.0 team was undefeated in the tournament, taking 11 of the 12 sets they played. The win also qualified them for the sectional in Hilton Head, making it the second year his team advanced to that level.
“We have a close knit team,” Notter said, “and everyone played extremely well throughout the weekend.”
If the teams make it through the sectional level they will vie for USTA national championships at a tournament to be held in Surprise, Arizona, in January.
