A dog died in a vehicle fire in Fort Smith Tuesday morning.
The fire destroyed a Dodge van in the parking lot of The Hydration Station, 3316 Wheeler Ave. Two dogs were inside the van at the time of the fire, Battalion Chief Teddy Abbey said.
Abbey said one of the dogs inside the vehicle died from smoke inhalation during the fire. The driver of the vehicle suffered a minor injury to her forehead while trying to rescue the dogs from the burning vehicle, he said.
The fire was called in to the Fort Smith Fire Department shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Abbey said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Fort Smith police officers and animal control employees assisted firefighters in their response. Sports & Imports responded to the scene for towing.
Abbey said the Dodge van was a complete loss.
