Fort Smith police have determined a man was fatally shot by a woman inside an apartment on X Street on Thursday, according to a news release from the Fort Smith Police Department.
Lt. Don Cobb with FSPD said the woman found in the apartment during officers' response at 2:30 p.m. Thursday "plainly stated" that she and the deceased man had been in an altercation and she shot him. The woman was then taken into custody without incident and transported to the police department for further questioning, Cobb said.
Details regarding the shooting are still being investigated, including questioning of any witnesses present during the incident, the release states.
"No charges related to the shooting have been filed at this time," the release states.
Preliminary findings from the incident's investigation indicate that the deceased man "may have forced his way into the apartment," which prompted the shooting, the release states. Cobb specifically said FSPD is investigating whether the shooting was in self-defense.
Cobb said he was unsure if the woman sustained any physical injuries in the incident.
"She may have psychological trauma that needs medical attention, but I’m not sure at this point," Cobb said.
FSPD officers and detectives were assisted by personnel with the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office, Fort Smith Fire Department and Fort Smith EMS immediately following their response.
"Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney for the determination to file charges, if any," the release states.
