Two dormitories that have stood unused since the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium transitioned to the Booneville Human Development Center in 1973 are in the process of being demolished.
The buildings, built in the 1950s, first had to undergo an asbestos abatement before being demolished.
Hopes are the site for the two buildings will soon become two new buildings.
“I think we’re as the third priority of capital investments to be given,” said BHDC superintendent Jeff Gonyea. “Where they’re taking (the dorms) down they’re going to prep them for rebuilding, if our funding comes through.”
BHDC added a floating dock to their water supply in 2014 shortly after the construction of a recreation center, which was completed in August of 2015 and was the first new building on the campus in more than 50 years.
