LITTLE ROCK — Pope County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot an 83-year-old man who they said fired a rifle at them Thursday, according to the Arkansas State Police.

Quinton Phillips died after being shot during a confrontation with deputies who responded to a call about an armed disturbance in the Dover area at about 3:10 p.m. Thursday, state police said.

State police reported that deputies said Phillips confronted them holding a rifle and they ordered him to drop the gun, but instead, he took cover behind a truck and fired the rifle at the deputies. No law enforcement officers were hurt.

The Arkansas State Police said it is investigating the incident and will submit the results of its investigation to the prosecuting attorney for consideration to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.
